Which bit of eye rigs do you need to learn? The easy part is make hemispheres for the eyeballs, put one bone inside each one with the root at the centre of the base of the hemisphere, make two target bones for each of them, then parent the two target bones to another bone.  Then get the bones in the eyes to point at their respective targets.  The hard part is making sure the eye sockets are being correctly affected to move like eye muscles if the style is slightly more realistic otherwise you just have balls rolling around in sockets XD But there are reasons I use the pitchipoy rig.  I do know how to rig in Blender these days, but I hate rigging XD even just modifying for a winged character made me frustrated XD (did a test which is on Youtube if you want to see how that went).

I find sss, gloss/transparency/reflection (especially high levels thereof) and particles are what slows me down most of the time if that helps.  If you have a particularly large animation or image which you want in high quality but can't get the time down to something your computer will manage within this lifetime even after cutting down what you can without sacrificing quality you can use BURP or Sheep It, do you know about them already?

Aside from wondering why it's walking toe first, it looks like you're going pretty well :D
